Tents 

For tents we recommend a two-person lightweight three-season model.  The REI half dome is a good bargain right now.  You want a tent with a good rain fly that is easy to setup. Tents with two doors make entries and exits easy.  For safety reasons a Scout will always share a tent with another Scout.  We do not allow single person tents.

Sleeping Bags 

For sleeping bags you want a "stuffable" style bag with synthetic insulation and a hood.  The synthetic insulation will continue to provide insulation even when wet.  A down bag will not and makes a poor choice for a new Scout.  You can go with a higher temperature rated bag if you desire.

Rain Gear (pants & jackets) 

We recommend raingear that is waterproof and breathable.  The pants and jackets combination are much better than a poncho.  A water resistant as opposed to waterproof pant is okay.  Stick with a waterproof for the jacket.    

 

REI has several options to choose from.  Please see the link shown below.  The REI Ultra Light Jacket is what I bought for my boys.  They held up well and more importantly were available in kid's sizes.
